For the next Heat, this Friday, November 16, Warhol's Factory enters the '80s. In the early '80's New York was the epicenter for visual arts, performance art, fashion, and dance music. Keith Haring and Klaus Nomi were at the East Village's Club 57. ESG, Liquid, Liquid, Arthur Baker, Larry Levan, and New Order were at the Paradise Garage. Warhol, Halston, and Grace Jones were at Studio 54.

The next Heat features art, music, and personalities from or inspired by New York in the early '80's. Plus DJ Donimo and DJ6 spinning the latest indie electro remixes. Hosted by Artemis Chase. Special appearances by BeBe Sweetbriar as Donna Summer and Mercedez Munro as Grace Jones. Art by Twig. Graffiti art by Matthew Bajda. Visual projections and installations by Ben. Hot go go dancers.

It's finally arrived! The Opening Night Party of Club Heat at the Stud is this Friday, October 19. Heat, an indie disco, is a confluence of music, art, fashion, drag, and flesh.

Heat's resident artists Twig and Candy are busy turning the Stud into Warhol's Factory. Heat's resident filmmaker Ben is finishing off his Warhol-inspired visual projections and installations in preparation for the opening.

Heat's Candy Darling is hostess Artemis Chase, the sexy strip poker dealer at Lucky Pierre. Come in drag as a Factory Superstar, or as Andy himself, and get in free!

Hot go go dancers, including Wolf Hudson (star of Falcon Entertainment/ Jocks Studio's new film, "Road Trip Vol. 1: Russian River"), will bring a little of Dallesandro's 42nd Street downtown to the Stud's Factory.

Shadowplay Stage at SF Pride this Sunday 6/24!!!

This Sunday, June 24, celebrate Pride at the Shadowplay Stage, the SF Pride Festival's indie dance oasis. The Stage is on Hyde St, just inside the festival gates from Market St, from noon to 6:30pm. Meet up with friends, hang out, and dance in the streets. The festival is free, though a donation to Pride, which goes to local non-profits, is encouraged.

From noon to 3pm, the Stage will feature the best of Shadowplay: indie, electro, discopunk, plus punk, new wave, post-punk, riot grrrl, and glam classics. DJs are Donimo (Shadowplay, Lucky Pierre, Substance), Candy (Now Hear This!), and DJ6 (Shadowplay, Lucky Pierre, Now Hear This!).

From 3pm-6:30pm, we'll feature Lucky Pierre at the Shadowplay Stage. Coco Canal (Miss Trannyshack 2005) will host, and we'll have strip poker and go go dancers, and more of the mad excess for which Lucky Pierre has become notorious. DJ Donimo and DJ6 will spin the latest electro burners.

If you'd like to dance up on the risers, please come to the Stage to sign a release first. If you'd like to volunteer to help, please contact us on tribe or via the Lucky Pierre MySpace.

Shadowplay 4/20: Our Five Year Anniversary!!!

This Friday, 4/20, Shadowplay celebrates it’s fifth anniversary! Five years ago, Shadowplay started at 26 Mix, mixing new danceable indie with classic post-punk and new wave. Three and a half years ago, Shadowplay morphed into Vanguard, the electro/discopunk/no wave club at Lit, while the Shadowplay name was continued by the Shadowplay Stage at SF Pride (now in it’s fifth year). Finally, in early 2005, Shadowplay opened at the Stud.

Throughout, we’ve prided ourselves on playing the best new music long before it is heard elsewhere, mixed with old favorites. Shadowplay "New Rave" night, March 16

Friday March 16 is "New Rave" night at Shadowplay, the indie, new wave, electro, discopunk club, as DJ Donimo (Lucky Pierre, Substance) jumps on London's latest fad: ravey indie/electro remixes, played to kids wearing retro-rave gear. Bring glow sticks and funny hats. Yes, it’s hype, but there are some excellent tracks, so by the end of the night, your ironic glow-stick waving may turn sincere!

We eagerly anticipate the opening DJ set: the Shadowplay debut of DJ 6. DJ 6 is a music producer who was singer-songwriter for one of SF’s better ‘90’s indie bands. He was swallowed up by the City of Angels a few years back, but has now been regurgitated back to our Golden Gate. Come early and welcome him!

TO most people in Britain, rave is a memory, and a blurry one at that. For four years at the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, Britain’s youth took to the fields, forests and warehouses, took Ecstasy, wore some of the silliest outfits ever devised — like cricket hats, white gloves and gas masks — and ushered out Thatcherism in a strobe-lighted haze of electronic music that shook the ground they danced on.

Then Parliament passed the Criminal Justice Act of 1994, which humorlessly characterized rave music as “the emission of a succession of repetitive beats,” and gave police the power to shut raves down. That swiftly put an end to the scene’s drug-induced violence — and to the scene itself.

But if you happen to be in London these days, there are signs that something like rave is stirring again.

“The first time around, rave really seeped into the mainstream,” said Carri Mundane, 26, a designer who was a child during the first rave scene but kept the fliers amassed by her older brother. “The music was in the charts, and everything just became a little bit more psychedelic.”

This time, it’s more insular. And it’s different in other ways, too: some of the music is rock, not electronica, and the scene is no longer as defined by the twin illegalities of drugs and trespassing.

But a collection of young creative types are dressing up and making music that unmistakably refers back to the garishness, the euphoria and the escapism of 15 years ago.

In mid-December, the Klaxons — an indie rock band and the self-appointed leaders of the scene — invited a pack of D.J.’s, artists and other performers to play a final gig of the year under the railway arches of London Bridge.

The location was the site of illegal parties in the early 1990s but, in keeping with the more sanitized character of today’s movement, is now a well-appointed nightclub with a bouncer, sofas to lounge on and $7 beers.

The music didn’t sound like rave. Though tinged with electronica, the Klaxons and two other bands played stripped-back rock, not unlike much of the music that has been in vogue in Britain the last few years. And the dance floor was more of a punkish mosh pit, with lots of shoving revelers, than a blissed-out, synchronized community of dancers.

Still, there were glow sticks — a kind of waving coral reef of neon pinks, yellow and greens — and between acts, young men in leather jackets nudged their way around the dance floor, offering Ecstasy. Teenage fans wore reflective jackets, neon paint, sunglasses, beads and whistles as they hurled themselves back and forth, up and down, suggesting that if this wasn’t rave, then it was certainly a somehow-related cousin.

Like the original, the new rave scene may be a refuge from reality. Although neither incarnation of rave would claim anything as coherent as an ideology, there may be an echo of Margaret Thatcher’s frustrated youth among those experiencing the last days of Tony Blair’s Britain, said Tahita Bulmer, the lead singer of the band New Young Pony Club.

“That spirit of contentment has faded,” she said, with the country vehemently opposed to the way the prime minister has handled the war in Iraq. But it’s when people are unhappy, she added, that “everything goes neon and gets exciting.”

Ms. Mundane, the designer, who wears brightly colored clothing that has made her an arbiter of rave fashion, said, “What I like about rave is the positivity of it, the fact that it is so utopian.”

The rave renaissance may be a reaction to the country’s dour political state or to the tyranny of indie rock. “There’s only so much partying you can do to these shoe-gazing indie bands,” said Jaimie Hodgson, a music journalist, referring to Britain’s emo-heavy music scene.

Many participants say they are nostalgic for a movement they are old enough to at least remember, even if they have not experienced it themselves. Or perhaps they’re just looking for an excuse to dress up and take Ecstasy, otherwise known as MDMA, a drug best known for inducing a touchy-feely, sensation-inducing high.

The new rave scene is a small, tightly connected movement of artists, D.J.’s, bands and partygoers forged in a series of warehouse parties that, beginning in 2003, were organized by a gang of artists called the Wowow Boys, in New Cross, a ragtag neighborhood of students and boarded-up buildings southeast of London Bridge.

As in the 1990s, the gatherings attracted newly formed bands that were eager to create an environment “where the specific aim was to party, “ said Jamie Reynolds, the bass player of the Klaxons.

Hence, the outrageous outfits: At a New Young Pony Club gig, Oisin Butler, a psychology student who said he was starting a band called Aids Baby, sat wearing a purple bow tie, a red cardigan and glasses with Day-Glo frames and no lenses. His jeans were so tight there was no room for his keys. “You can wear anything, as long as it’s odd, or glittery, or neon, or is really disgusting,” he said.

At a popular monthly dance party in Islington, North London, people are encouraged to download smiley masks — a throwback to the original rave scene and an Ecstasy reference — from a Web site. The event started in 2003 with a party in an abandoned public bathroom; this summer 3,000 people in fluorescent attended its Glade Festival.

The dance-music scene has been “snowballing” for the last three years, says the party’s D.J. and promoter, who calls himself Saint Acid. He added that his early events were mainly attended by people in their 30s, wearing old clothes and looking to relive the dance parties of their youth, but now the crowd is “getting younger and younger.”

Mark Archer is half of Altern8, a riotous dance act last seen playing the violin in biological warfare suits in 1991. After 15 years of relative quiet, Mr. Archer, now 38, played at the recent Islington party and is enjoying the unlikely satisfaction of seeing a young band, Trash Fashion, cover one of Altern8’s old tracks.

“If someone had told me 16 years ago that I would still be playing now the same music I was then, and that rock bands would be covering our songs, I would have laughed,” he said. “All of a sudden rave has become cool again. It’s been a bit of a shock.”

Brothers, sisters, we don’t need that fascist groove thang…

OK—this is a long announcement for Shadowplay. The short version is that this Friday, Nov. 3, Shadowplay will feature DJ Donimo with guest DJ Ray McCrorey (Brigitte Bardot), who spins his own original remixes. As usual, expect the latest and hottest indie/electro remixes, plus classic new wave. Go go dancers Ben and Annie. The Stud’s stiff drinks to keep you dancing. It will be a very good time.

However, Swedish glam rockers The Ark will not be spinning a DJ set, as planned, due to a little international incident described below. Instead, we’ll have a subversive/ revolutionary theme. Wear your favorite subversive attire. We’ll be mixing in anti-authority and subversive themed music throughout the night. Think it as a pre-party for the following Tuesday, Election Day, when we hope that American voters will start to take our country back.

This Friday, Nov. 3, Shadowplay had planned to present an afterparty for Swedish glam rockers the Ark, who were to perform at Slim’s that night. Many of you witnessed the band’s amazing performance at the Shadowplay Stage and the Main Stage at last June’s SF Pride Festival. The Ark had a rough week—last Sunday, Oct. 22, the Ark were performing at the opening of the new Swedish embassy in Washington, DC. The Embassy is under the flight path for Reagan National Airport, and planes were flying overhead. A plane flew overhead as the Ark were about to launch into “One of Us is Going to Die Young,” and lead singer Ola Salo was reported to have joked that the plane was going in the right direction, towards the White House. Unfortunately, a Republican present demanded that the Swedish ambassador go on stage and apologize to America on behalf of the Ark. The ambassador initially refused, noting something about our two countries’ respect for free speech. (The Swedish ambassador perhaps doesn’t understand the new America very well!) Anyway, the incident was reported in the Washington Post, then further distorted on Fox News (which reported that the Ark turned the Embassy opening into an anti-Bush rally). Death threats ensued, visa problems were reportedly discovered, and in the ensuing international incident, the Ark fled to Stockholm. Details here:

The Ark was planning to resume the tour in Chicago, but the show was cancelled there, reportedly after death threats. The Ark then had planned to resume at least the West Coast portion of their tour, with an appearance at Slim’s this Friday, Nov. 3, followed by a DJ set by the band members at the Ark after-party at Shadowplay. We now have received word that now the entire tour has been cancelled.

Shadowplay Stage at Pride Festival Sunday

The Shadowplay Stage will be back again for the San Francisco Pride Festival on Sunday, June 25, 2006, noon-6:30pm. . The Shadowplay stage will be located at Hyde St, just off Market St. This year we are featuring, all the way from Sweden, the glam rock band The Ark.

The Shadowplay Stage is Pride’s indie dance oasis. DJ Donimo and guests spin the latest indie, electro, and discopunk remixes, plus alternative classics ranging from ‘70’s glam and punk, to ‘80’s new wave, no wave, and post-punk, to ‘90’s riot grrrl. It’s the place at Pride for indie boys and grrrls, punks, goths, mods and rockers, prisoners of the ‘80’s, and other music fanatics. All ages!

Shadowplay Stage schedule:
Noon - 1:00pm --Femme Fury (Catfight)
1:00 - 2:00 pm – Skip (New Wave City)

Bjork last night at the Stud

I posted this on my tribe blog, but thought folks would appreciate this in the Shadowplay tribe, as well.

It was a crazy night!

We arrived at the Stud last night little after 10pm, and the place was already crowded. There was a crappy CD on, so when we arrived, Stud owner Mikey asked us if we had any music we could put on. We got from my car a CD Tim had burned for Shadowplay, of some cool discopunk remixes, and ended up playing that for an hour. The crowd was dancing. Then, the Extra Action Marching Band marched into the packed club, and all of a sudden, the place was a cacophony of tubas, french horns, trumpets, and percussion.

When the marching band arrived, we went into the DJ booth to turn off the CD, when all of a sudden, Matthew Barney and Bjork were in the DJ booth with us! They were escorted in by Matmos, but only Tim (Donimo) could figure out how to set up all of their laptops with the Stud's soundsystem. By the time Tim got all of their gear connected, we were trapped with them in the DJ booth by the mob of people. We heard that the line outside was around the block.

Bjork was really nice-- she complimented Tim on the music he played, and she danced with us in the DJ booth. Bjork was a little freaked by the size of the crowd-- it was supposed to be a private party. Matthew Barney played an hour of speedmetal on the laptops. Bjork turned the volume up to 11. Then Bjork DJ'd. She played Mu and Peaches and Kelis as well as Foreigner, Eddie Grant, and Top 40 pop. We danced some more with Bjork, and chatted with her and her entourage-- all nice folks!

We finally made our way out of the DJ booth at around 1:30 am, and out of the club by 1:45am. There were still a few people in line to get in when we left.

back Friday, April 7 with a record release party for Swedish glam band
The Ark. The Ark are fronted by the hot Ola Salo, whose live performances
have been compared to Hedwig. They are releasing "The State of the
Ark," featuring "Clamour for Glamour" and "This Poetry is Meant to Do
Harm." We've got lots of give-aways to mark the occasion. Plus we have the
latest indie/electro remixes and new wave faves spun by DJ Donimo, and
our glamorous guest DJs Rchrd Oh?! (http://this.bigstereo.net, Hold Yr
Horses) and Femme Fury (Shadowplay's "Cherry Bomb" nights, Catfight, and

*Ziggy fights demons in outer space alongside Ozzy Osbourne, and;

*Kate Bush announces that "Mick and Oz have called a meeting of the Council of Elders," only it appears that Pete Townshend called the meeting.
